The Merit System Protection Board is primarily charged with reviewing decisions of Federal Agencies in which an employee has been suspended for 14 or more days or has been terminated. The claims are generally not based on discrimination but rather on an argument that the penalty imposed for the conduct was too harsh, that the government failed to follow the appropriate procedures before taking the action, or that there was an insufficient basis for imposing the penalty. The MSPB uses procedures that are quite similar to a court of law but on a much more expedited basis.
